“Come for the tool, stay for the network.” Chris Dixon's line has been shared far and wide.

I've noticed it happening in reverse.

Come for the network, stay for the tools.

You join for the community. The people, the conversations, the collective energy. Then you stay because they've built things that make your work better.

Trends.co started as a community of trend spotters and became research tools. Product Hunt began as an email list sharing cool products and built discovery and launch tools. Weekend Club came out of a WhatsApp group and developed course creation tools.

What's interesting is how organic it feels. The tools aren't forced. They emerge from what the community already needs.

It flips the usual product development approach. Instead of building a tool and hoping a community forms around it, build the network and let the tools follow.

It's not rocket surgery. It isn't easy either, mostly because it needs two very different skill sets that rarely sit in the same team.

Building a valuable network needs community builders, facilitators, people who understand group dynamics. Building tools at the right fidelity, at speed, needs product people, engineers, designers.

What's changed is the speed at which those two have to come together.
