A Quiet Way to Know Someone

On receiving a book someone's already read

You know those people who read 100 books a year?

I'm not one of them.

Self-employed, laptop nerd, parent of energetic child, aching muscles, SAD winter. Reading time is scarce. Motivation less so.

But I read this one.

Not just because it's great (it is).
Because it was a gift.

That's the thing about a book someone's read and then given to you. You read it differently.

Did they underline this sentence?
Did they think of me when they read this part?

You're not just reading the book.
You're thinking about them.
You're reading how they may be reading you.

It's a quiet way to know someone.

P.S. The book in question? The Art of Game Design, by Jesse Schell.
