Adventures #34: Getting the word out

Inspiration at the Bronx Creative & Tech Career Pathways group meeting hosted by the good folks at Dreamyard

Hi

There are times when we need to get the word out: launching a project; finding a job; seeking like minds.

But it’s not just about the message or the medium. It’s also about the pipes: how we gain and build distribution.

While there are a hundred ways to think about this, perhaps it boils down to two things:

(1) Keep producing: showing up with the work again and again...and again
(2) Make it easy for people to tell others who care

Consistently doing (1) means the work will get better.
When the work gets better, (2) starts to happen.
And (2) eventually leads to us becoming irresistible to the partners, advocates, and gatekeepers who can amplify our messages even more.

Taking this road is long and bumpy, and success is not guaranteed. But it’s almost definitely the best way to go.

Trying to take my own advice, I’m showing up with this email on the first Thursday, a podcast every Tuesday, and now back on Instagram with little snippets of career fuel.

Perhaps you'll tell the others.

And more importantly: what can I tell the others about you?

Thanks for reading.

How to use TikTok

As if I needed a further reminder I'm not 25 anymore, another social network takes off and leaves me feeling like a conservative octogenarian who's been teleported into a Sunday morning at Berghain.

Luckily, this breakdown of TikTok makes things a little easier to understand.

WeWTF

WeWork have taken a pasting in the last few weeks. Alongside Scott Galloway's highly acerbic zingers, this piece by (probably) a writer under pseudonym gets right into it. Watch out for the book and movie adaptations coming soon.

Barker: Utility

Berlin-based record label Ostgut Ton is often associated with sparse, subterranean Teutonic techno, but they also put out a steady stream of more fluid material that dares to soar and dream - like this lovely new album from Sam Barker.

(thanks to MFG for putting this under my nose)
